Kicked off Cobra

My wife retired from her job in April 2012. We then went on Cobra for 18 months.
My wife reached age 65 in September and qualified for Medicare. I received notice that my (spouse) coverage is to terminate 10/13/2013. I thought that when she reached Medicare age while we were still on Cobra that it was called a second qualifying event and I could remain on extended Cobra for another 18 months. The insurance company says no ... it doesn't count as a second event because it wouldn't have caused me to loose my insurance if the first event (when she retired) had not occurred. In other words if she was still working when she reached Medicare age i could extend my coverage. This doesn't seem right to us. What do you think?
