The services of a Doula are only qualifying to the extent that they provide medical care for the mother or child. Services like emotional support, parenting information, child care, or housekeeping are not qualified.

  • A few additional points about Doulas:

    1) Often you have to pre-pay for their services prior to your child's birth. You cannot pre-pay for expenses with an FSA so you will not be able to submit your expense for reimbursement until the service has actually occurred (the child is born).

    2) As Jeremy stated, Doula expenses related to providing medical care for the mother are covered but there are often items post-birth that are not covered. Make sure you ask for a breakdown of the total cost of the Doula so you will know ahead of time what amount can be claimed through your Medical Flexible Spending Account.

    3) If you are unsure of if a Doula line item charge will be covered please contact us directly (via email info@24hourflex.com, phone at 303-369-7886 or 1-800-651-4855).

  • Follow-up question about the Doula service.

You mentioned that only the delivery assistance is the covered expense. What we are finding is that many Doula's offer their services as packages that include pre, delivery, and post services. How is this accounted for?

  • Thanks for giving a specific example. In the package deal you linked to the only non-eligible expense on the list would be the photographs and since they are optional I assume the entire package would be reimbursable.

Just note that the expense couldn't be claimed until after the birth and follow on visit. We often see additional services post birth that the IRS does not consider to be birth related (unlike the postpartum visit in your package).
